Most decline in western Washington traces to stress — drought, root damage, or the wrong tree in the wrong spot — often with a regional disease taking hold once the tree is weakened. The catch is that the worst problems, especially root rots, hide underground and don’t show in the crown until real damage is done. A proper diagnosis beats a guess: many issues are manageable caught early, but some can’t be cured and turn the tree into a hazard.

A tree tells you it’s in trouble late, and quietly

Trees don’t complain. A fir can be losing its root system to decay for years while the top still looks green enough to ignore — and then a summer of drought or a single windstorm tips it over the edge. That lag is the whole challenge of tree health: the visible symptom is often the last chapter, not the first.

This guide won’t turn you into a plant pathologist, and it shouldn’t. What it will do is help you notice the early signals, understand the handful of problems common in our climate, and know the difference between “water it and watch” and “get this diagnosed now” — so you act while acting still helps.

  • Prevention over cure — right tree, right place; water in drought; protect the roots.
  • Honesty about what’s treatable — some problems are managed, some aren’t, and a pro will say which.
  • A clear line between a health problem and a hazard — decay that threatens people changes the urgency.

If someone eyeballs a browning tree and jumps straight to “it needs to come down,” that’s a sales reflex, not a diagnosis. The right first move is figuring out what’s actually wrong.

Notice the pattern: heat and drought sit behind much of this list. A tree already stressed by a dry summer is the one a disease or beetle finds easiest to take. That’s why watering and root care aren’t fussing — they’re the frontline defense.

Reading the signs

What to notice, and what’s normal

The signals worth watching: a crown that’s thinning or going yellow, dieback starting at the top or working inward from the tips, leaves or needles coloring and dropping well before autumn, mushrooms or conks at the base, or a sudden burst of cones on a conifer that looks stressed. Any of these, especially if they’re new or spreading, is a reason to get a look from someone who can diagnose.

Myth: My evergreen has brown needles inside — it must be dying.

Every fall, worried homeowners spot browning in the interior of their firs, cedars, and pines and assume the worst.

The reality

Conifers shed their oldest, innermost needles every year — a normal, seasonal yellow-then-brown-then-drop from the inside of the canopy outward. That’s healthy housekeeping, not disease. What’s worth attention is browning at the tips and outer growth, dieback moving down from the top, or thinning that gets worse year over year. Knowing the difference saves a lot of needless panic — and a few needless removals.

One question worth asking

“Is this new or getting worse — and is it the old inner growth or the new outer growth?” That single distinction separates normal shedding from real decline.

When health becomes safety

The point where a sick tree becomes a dangerous one

Most disease is a health question you have time to work through. But some — root rots especially — are also a structural problem: as they destroy the roots or hollow the trunk, they quietly remove the tree’s ability to hold itself up. A Douglas-fir with advanced laminated root rot can look passable right up until it fails. That’s the moment a health issue crosses into the territory of our hazard guide: defect plus target.

So the practical rule is this: a thinning canopy on a tree over an open lawn is something to diagnose and manage at a reasonable pace. The same symptoms on a tree leaning over your roof deserve urgency, because if the cause is in the roots, the failure can come without much more warning. When in doubt about a large tree near people or structures, treat it as a safety question and get eyes on it.

Prevention that actually helps

  • Deep-water established trees during summer dry spells — especially cedars.
  • Mulch over the root zone (not against the trunk) to hold moisture.
  • Keep digging, trenching, and soil compaction away from the roots.
  • Plant the right species for the spot; favor natives suited to the site.
  • Don’t replant a susceptible conifer where root rot took the last one.

Questions homeowners ask

My western red cedar is browning at the top — is it dying?

Maybe stressed rather than dying. Cedars have grown vulnerable to dieback during our hotter, drier summers, and top-down browning is the classic sign. Deep, slow watering through dry spells helps a lot. If a large share of the crown is affected, get it assessed — but don’t assume the worst from some browning.

Can root rot be cured?

Generally no. Root rots like laminated root rot can’t be treated away; management means removing affected trees and not replanting susceptible conifers in the same ground, since the fungus persists in old roots and stumps for years. Resistant species — cedars, pines, hardwoods — are the path forward on an infected site.

Should I be watering my big established trees?

In a dry western-Washington summer, yes — especially cedars and other moisture-lovers. Deep, infrequent soakings over the root zone beat frequent light sprinkles. A well-watered tree is far more able to resist the pests and diseases that pick off stressed ones.

There are mushrooms at the base of my tree. How bad is that?

Conks or mushrooms on the trunk or roots point to internal decay, which is both a health and a potential safety issue. Some trees carry it for years; others are seriously compromised. It’s a clear reason for a professional assessment — see our hazard guide for how the risk is judged.

Will a diseased tree infect my others?

It depends on the disease. Root rots spread tree-to-tree through root contact, so a diagnosis matters for protecting nearby conifers. Others, like needle casts, are more limited. Proper cleanup of infected debris and the right diagnosis are how you keep one sick tree from becoming several.

Can I plant a new tree where a diseased one stood?

Often, but not always with the same species. If a root rot was involved, avoid replanting susceptible conifers there and choose a resistant or immune species instead. When in doubt, ask what the site can safely support before you replant.
